Happy New Year, Life Updates, & Reading Deprivation
Happy New Year! Happy 2012, friends! I’ve missed writing for you all the past few weeks. I have a few pretty good reasons for neglecting my blogging, though… Read on for some life updates! Life Updates I started a new job. In early December I started a new full-time job at the New York City Leadership Academy, an education nonprofit that trains principals to work in NYC public schools. I’m super excited to join their team, and my … Read entire article »

FORUMS, including Online Book Club
Online Book Club As many of you know, I started a book club to discuss Alice LaPlante’s novel Turn of Mind. We had a little trouble finding a time that worked for everyone to talk together live on Vyew. With my husband’s technical help I created a book forum for us to use as a conversation tool. Each month, we’ll choose a new book to read together and discuss on the forum. The discussion will remain open … Read entire article »

Guest Post at Jenn’s Bookshelves! and Announcements
Indie Thursday Today I have a guest post at Jenn’s Bookshelves on her promotion Indie Thursday. In honor of this occasion, I am switching my allegiance on this blog from Amazon to Powell’s. Going forward, all links to books I review will be through Powell’s, an independent bookstore covering an entire square city block in Portland, OR. (They actually give you a map of the store when you walk in.) If you purchase a book through … Read entire article »

Join the First-Ever Books Distilled Book Club!
I’m so excited to announce that I’m launching a book club through Books Distilled! Harold Bloom once said that “Reading well is one of the great pleasures that solitude can afford you,” and I agree with that. But I also love coming together with people who have read the same book and discussing everything about it that made it great (or horrible!). Update: Discussing books live proved to cause some scheduling problems. You can join the … Read entire article »

Check out my story!
Happy Saturday, folks! My story, “Flight 393,” is today’s featured story on Fiction365. It’s about a girl suffering from Asperger’s syndrome traveling on a flight home from France that turns rather dramatic. While I’m on a self-advertising kick, I’d love it if you’d like Books Distilled on Facebook! (You can also follow me on Twitter if you haven’t already.) Once you’ve read about my neurotic character’s super-dramatic flight home–do it!–check out some other fantastic short stories, poetry, and … Read entire article »

Guest Post: CLASSROOM TAKEOVER at Birdbrain(ed) Book Blog
Happy Wednesday, folks. My post this week is a little early because it is a (fabulous, if I do say so myself…) guest spot at Birdbrain(ed) Book Blog, with my friend Anastasia as your host. For her Classroom Takeover feature, I got to dream up what kind of English course I’d teach if I had free rein with a bunch of college kids in my clutches. It was fun. Check it out: Classroom Takeover. Tweet … Read entire article »

Why Making Enough Money to Live Isn’t Enough: Guest Post at Midwife for your Life
Hey, everyone! Happy Wednesday. A few weeks ago I read a post called How to Quit Your Job, by Stacey Curnow of Midwife for Your Life (a guest post at Everyday Bright). Along with a lot of other signs and choices, it combined to lead me to give notice at my job at the end of last week. This is a huge relief and I’m finally feeling back to my optimistic self! I had the opportunity to speak with Stacey a few weeks ago and share my journey. I also submitted a post about it to her blog, and she accepted! Check it out: Why Making Enough Money to Live Isn’t Enough. Readers of Midwife for your Life, welcome to Books Distilled! If You Liked …
First off, a very HAPPY 20TH BIRTHDAY to my little sister, Brittany! June 9, baby. Twenty years ago today Mom called me at Aunt Maryanne’s house and told me I had a baby sister. Pretty wild. Anyway, I’m trying something a little different today, folks. I started a new page entitled, “Read this!“ It could also be called, “If you like, then try…,” if that weren’t too long to fit in the nav bar. This page … Read entire article »
