Happy New Year, Life Updates, & Reading Deprivation

Happy New Year! Happy 2012, friends!  I’ve missed writing for you all the past few weeks.  I have a few pretty good reasons for neglecting my blogging, though… Read on for some life updates! Life Updates I started a new job.  In early December I started a new full-time job at the New York City Leadership Academy, an education nonprofit that trains principals to work in NYC public schools.  I’m super excited to join their team, and my … Read entire article »

Book Review: Second Nature: A Love Story

Book Review: Second Nature: A Love Story

Several weeks ago I reviewed Jacquelyn Mitchard’s first novel, The Deep End of the Ocean, and was able to sit down with her for a few moments for an interview.  She was kind enough to give me her publicist’s contact information, and I was able to snag a copy of her newest book, Second Nature: A Love Story, which releases tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept. 6).  (This is practically the coolest thing that has ever happened to … Read entire article »

Literary Roundup

Literary Roundup

I’m a little short on folks to guest post, so if you want to share the 5 books you can’t live without, send me an email! (books.distilled at gmail dot com) I’ve been reading a lot of fantastic books for school.  For our first two semesters in the MFA program, we read 10 books each semester and write craft essays on each, focusing on a specific craft or technique the author used to achieve effective writing … Read entire article »

Book Review: Flesh

Book Review: Flesh

I read Hollis Seamon’s novel Flesh while attending a workshop with her at my MFA residency.  Maybe it was studying with Hollis in the flesh (sorry, had to), or maybe it was hanging out with so many writers for so many days, or maybe it was hearing the awesome faculty readings in the evenings–but I read this novel with an entirely different mindset than usual.   Usually I meander through a story, perhaps enjoying the writer’s use … Read entire article »

Check out my story!

Check out my story!

Happy Saturday, folks! My story, “Flight 393,” is today’s featured story on Fiction365.  It’s about a girl suffering from Asperger’s syndrome traveling on a flight home from France that turns rather dramatic. While I’m on a self-advertising kick, I’d love it if you’d like Books Distilled on Facebook!  (You can also follow me on Twitter if you haven’t already.) Once you’ve read about my neurotic character’s super-dramatic flight home–do it!–check out some other fantastic short stories, poetry, and … Read entire article »

Author Interview: Jacquelyn Mitchard

Author Interview: Jacquelyn Mitchard

I had the pleasure of attending a workshop with Jacquelyn Mitchard during my ten-day MFA residency on Enders Island in Mystic, Connecticut last week. My fellow students and some of our faculty also had the chance to hear Jackie read from her new novel Second Nature: A Love Story, which comes out in September, as well as from a beautiful article about her son, Robby.  I got to sit down with Jackie to talk to … Read entire article »

Book Review: The Deep End of the Ocean

Book Review: The Deep End of the Ocean

Homeward Bound As you read this, I am headed home from my 10-day MFA residency in Mystic, CT.  When I was assigned my workshop faculty several weeks ago, I was thrilled to have one five-day workshop with Jacquelyn Mitchard. Oprah’s Book Club I knew that one of her books, The Deep End of the Ocean, had been an Oprah’s Book Club pick.  Through a little digging I discovered a pretty amazing fact:  Oprah started Oprah’s Book Club because … Read entire article »
